hen Captain Jon Ross started Tampa Bay Pontoon Rentals, he already knew the water. He'd spent years on boats, both for work and for fun. Jon is a retired Marine law enforcement officer, and he holds an OUPV license and a 25 Ton Master rating. What he saw was an opportunity to offer a higher-quality rental experience.

His idea was to make renting a pontoon boat in Tampa Bay easy for people who don't own a boat and may have never driven one. As a newer operation, he's built the whole business around that.

We asked Jon a few questions about how it's going.

Built for people who have never driven a boat

Jon created Tampa Bay Pontoon Rentals for visitors and locals who want a day on the water without boating experience or the commitment of owning a boat. A lot of his customers are first-timers, and he plans around that.

“Many of our customers are first-time boaters, so taking the extra time to make them comfortable and confident on the water makes a huge difference.”

His customers are mostly families and vacationers, along with locals celebrating birthdays, anniversaries and other special occasions. Most of them want a relaxing day and the flexibility to explore at their own pace.

Brand-new boats and no surprises

When Jon set up the fleet, he invested in brand-new pontoons with modern Suzuki power, updated electronics and premium features. His thinking was simple: customers deserve dependable equipment.

“From day one, our goal was to remove the stress and uncertainty that can sometimes come with rentals.”

In practice, that means clean, well-maintained boats, clear instructions and a thorough orientation. The goal is for customers to spend the day making memories instead of dealing with equipment problems.

“The boating itself is often the easy part”

Ask Jon what surprised him most about running a boat rental business, and he doesn't talk about boats.

“The biggest lesson has been that customer communication is everything. The boating itself is often the easy part.”

He says setting expectations, answering questions and making customers feel supported before they ever arrive at the marina has been one of the biggest reasons for good experiences and repeat customers. That's also how he defines a premium rental.

“For us, premium means being responsive, transparent, and proactive throughout the entire process.”

Where BookingCentral fits in

Good communication takes time, and a lot of rental work happens before anyone steps on a boat. Jon uses BookingCentral to take some of the admin off his plate.

“Technology has allowed us to streamline reservations, manage schedules efficiently, simplify paperwork, and communicate more effectively with customers. BookingCentral has helped create a smoother booking experience while reducing administrative work, allowing us to spend more time focusing on customer service and operations.”

For operators setting up something similar, a few BookingCentral features are built for exactly this. Digital Documents lets customers complete waivers and rental agreements before they arrive. Two-way texting keeps them in the loop. A drag-and-drop calendar and fleet management keep the schedule straight, and the mobile app helps your team handle check-in and check-out from the dock. Where Jon sends first-time renters

Having a plan for the day also helps new boaters feel confident. Jon says Tampa Bay is best experienced from the water. Customers can explore sandbars, look for dolphins, visit waterfront restaurants or just anchor and enjoy the scenery. A few of his favorite spots to recommend:

  • Shell Key
  • Bunces Pass
  • Egmont Key
  • Boca Ciega Bay
  • The waterfront areas around Gulfport and St. Petersburg

It's a small touch, but giving customers a few ideas before they arrive is part of the communication Jon talks about.

What's next for Tampa Bay Pontoon Rentals

Jon plans to keep growing, but carefully.

“We want to expand our fleet thoughtfully, continue investing in quality equipment, and become the go-to option for premium pontoon rentals in the Tampa Bay area.”

Whether it's someone's first time at the helm or an experienced boater looking for quality equipment, he wants every customer to leave excited to come back and do it again.
